⚽ Reds Back On Their Perch

The moment Liverpool fans have been waiting for finally arrived last weekend: Liverpool hoisted the Premier League trophy at Anfield, making it official after weeks of inevitability.

The numbers:

  • 2nd Premier League title

  • 20th English top-flight championship (equalling Man United's record)

  • 4 matches to spare

  • 1st season under Dutch boss Arne Slot

Why it matters: This isn't just about silverware — it's about Liverpool finally drawing level with their bitter rivals from Old Trafford. The bragging rights alone might be worth the trophy's weight in gold to the Kop faithful.

The big picture: Slot has masterfully blended relentless pressing with clinical finishing in his debut campaign. What seemed like a massive risk when replacing Jürgen Klopp has turned into an absolute masterstroke.

Between the lines: From Merseyside pubs to supporters' clubs worldwide, the celebrations were properly massive. And why wouldn't they be? The Reds are officially back on their perch.

Barca & Inter Serve Up Six Goal Showdown

The Champions League semi-final first leg delivered exactly what neutrals were hoping for on Wednesday night: absolute chaos!

The numbers:

  • 6 goals (3 apiece)

  • 30 seconds (time it took Inter's Marcus Thuram to open the scoring)

  • 17 years old (age of Barça wonderkid Lamine Yamal, now the youngest-ever semi-final scorer)

  • 2 goals from Inter's Denzel Dumfries

  • 1 goal and 1 assist from Yamal's magical evening

Why it matters: With the sides deadlocked after this six-goal thriller, everything remains to play for in the return leg at San Siro on May 6.

The big picture: Barcelona showed tremendous character to fight back after Inter's explosive start, with teenage sensation Yamal proving once again he's the real deal on the biggest stage.

Between the lines: Ferran Torres and Raphinha completed Barça's goalscoring, with the latter's effort taking a fortunate deflection off Yann Sommer to keep this heavyweight contest perfectly poised.

Looking ahead: The second leg in Milan promises to be another barnstormer with a place in the Champions League final at stake.

🏉 Red Roses Keep Blooming

England's women did it again on Sunday, surviving an absolute nail-biter against France (43-42) to secure yet another Six Nations crown.

The numbers:

  • 4th consecutive Grand Slam

  • 7th straight Six Nations title

  • 31-7 lead before France's furious comeback

  • 1 crucial French knock-on in the final moments that preserved the win

Why it matters: The Red Roses have firmly established themselves as the gold standard in women's rugby, with this latest triumph coming at a packed Allianz Stadium at Twickenham.

The big picture: With the Women's Rugby World Cup fast approaching, this heart-stopping victory sends a clear message to the rest of the rugby world — England aren't just dominating, they're redefining excellence in the women's game.

Between the lines: Despite nearly surrendering their massive first-half advantage, the composure shown in those frantic final minutes demonstrates exactly why this golden generation keeps collecting silverware.

Looking ahead: All eyes now turn to the World Cup, where the Roses will enter as overwhelming favourites to claim the biggest prize in rugby.

🏉 SVNS Season Showdown In Los Angeles

The HSBC SVNS season finale rolls into town this weekend, with rugby's most electrifying format set to crown its champions.

The numbers:

  • 2 days of action (May 3-4)

  • 8 top teams in each division battling for glory

  • 1st place currently held by Argentina (men) and New Zealand (women)

  • 4 core series spots up for grabs in the SVNS Play-Off

Why it matters: This winner-takes-all tournament at Dignity Health Sports Park determines both the men's and women's world champions through a high-stakes playoff format.

The big picture: The Los Angeles finale serves as a perfect preview of what fans can expect when rugby sevens returns to the city for the 2028 Olympics.

Between the lines: Beyond the main event, the parallel SVNS Play-Off sees the bottom four teams from the core series fighting for survival against the top four Challenger Series sides.

Looking ahead: With Olympic medallists and emerging talent on display, the weekend promises lightning-fast action and spectacular skills as teams battle for end-of-season silverware.

🎾 Madrid Magic: Gauff Stuns Swiatek, Draper Defeats Arnaldi

Wednesday's action at the Mutua Madrid Open delivered two standout performances that have tennis fans buzzing.

The numbers:

  • 6-1, 6-1 (Gauff's dominant scoreline against world No. 1 Swiatek)

  • 1st victory for Gauff over Swiatek on clay

  • 6-0, 6-4 (Draper's impressive win against Arnaldi)

  • Top 5 ranking now secured by Draper

Why it matters: Gauff's demolition of defending champion Swiatek wasn't just a win—it was a statement. The American completely dismantled the usually dominant Pole on her preferred surface.

The big picture: Meanwhile, Britain's Jack Draper continues his meteoric rise, becoming the first British male since Andy Murray to crack the world's top five rankings.

Between the lines: Draper's clay court proficiency has been the biggest surprise, with this semifinal appearance at La Caja Mágica representing his first Masters 1000 success on the surface.

Looking ahead: Both players have announced themselves as serious contenders not just in Madrid, but for the upcoming French Open at Roland Garros.

🏎️ Max Missing In Miami

F1's reigning champ is currently nowhere to be found in Florida, with all eyes on his phone rather than his steering wheel.

The numbers:

  • 0 appearances by Verstappen at Thursday's media day

  • 1 baby on the way (Max's first with partner Kelly Piquet)

  • 3 wins in 5 races for championship leader Oscar Piastri

  • 1 previous Miami GP victory for Lando Norris (2024 winner)

Why it matters: The unusual circumstances have created a unique subplot to what's already shaping up as a fascinating Miami Grand Prix weekend.

The big picture: While Verstappen awaits a life-changing moment in Monaco, McLaren continues building momentum with both drivers showing race-winning pace.

Between the lines: Verstappen is expected to join the race weekend on Friday, assuming family matters proceed as planned. His delayed arrival adds another variable to an already unpredictable weekend.

Looking ahead: The Miami International Autodrome could witness a changing of the guard if the two McLaren driver’s early-season form continues against a potentially distracted champion.

4. The 2025 NFL Draft

The Great American Talent Grab

Last weekend (April 24-26), sports news in America was dominated by something called the 'NFL Draft' - an event that had millions glued to their screens but left many of us here in the UK scratching our heads. While American football continues to grow in popularity on British shores, the mechanics and significance of the draft remain a mystery to most casual observers. What exactly is this elaborate selection process? Why does it generate such excitement? And how does it differ from the transfer systems we're familiar with in football, rugby and cricket? Let's break down this uniquely American institution that combines sport, strategy and showbiz in equal measure.

Back in 1936, NFL owners faced a growing problem. The richest teams in the biggest cities were hoarding all the top university talent, creating a competitive imbalance. Philadelphia Eagles owner Bert Bell proposed a radical solution that would have seemed downright socialist to most Americans: the worst teams would pick first, the champions last. This revolutionary system has remained the cornerstone of NFL roster building ever since.

Think of it as the complete opposite of football relegation. Instead of punishing struggling teams by sending them down a division, American football rewards failure with first choice of the nation's best young players. It's a cycle of hope designed to prevent any one team from dominating for decades.

The modern NFL Draft takes place over three days, with all 32 teams selecting players across seven rounds. In total, 257 university players will find new homes this weekend, with the process broadcast live on multiple television networks to an audience of over 50 million viewers - making it more watched than Wimbledon fortnight or The Open Championship.

Day one (Thursday) features only the first round, where teams have 10 minutes each to make their selections. These are the premium players expected to become immediate stars. Day two (Friday) covers rounds two and three, while Saturday's marathon session wraps up the final four rounds, with teams having just four minutes per pick by the end.

Unlike football transfers, NFL teams can't simply buy any player they want. Each drafted player receives a contract with a value predetermined by their draft position. This year's first overall selection will sign a four-year deal worth approximately £30 million, while Mr. Irrelevant (the final pick) will earn closer to £700,000 over four years.

The 2025 Draft delivered genuine drama when the Tennessee Titans selected Miami quarterback Cam Ward with the first overall pick, hoping his electric playmaking will finally resurrect their struggling franchise. But it was the Jacksonville Jaguars who truly shook things up, trading multiple valuable picks to move up and select Colorado's two-way sensation Travis Hunter at number two - a player who excels at both wide receiver and cornerback.

For those unfamiliar with these positions, imagine if someone could play both as a winger and full-back at elite levels. Hunter dominated American university football like nobody in recent memory, winning the prestigious Heisman Trophy (think Ballon d'Or for university players) while playing significant time on both offence and defence - something virtually unheard of in modern American football.

What makes the draft so fascinating is the strategic element. Teams have complex grading systems for prospects, similar to football scouting networks but with infinitely more data. They must decide whether to select the most talented player regardless of position (known as "best player available") or fill specific team needs. Get it wrong, and executives might find themselves searching for new employment.

Trading picks adds another layer of complexity. Teams can swap draft positions, with those moving up typically paying a premium to those moving down. The Jaguars, for example, surrendered this year's 5th and 36th selections plus a valuable 2026 first-rounder to Cleveland for the right to draft Travis Hunter. That's an enormous gamble that will define careers in both front offices.

The "draft bust" haunts every executive's nightmares - highly-touted players who utterly fail at the professional level. The position with the highest bust rate? Quarterback, where 47% of first-rounders since 2000 have failed to meet expectations. Meanwhile, offensive linemen (the big lads who protect the quarterback) offer the safest return on investment.

Beyond statistics and strategies, the draft delivers genuinely emotional moments. Many players come from challenging backgrounds, with the draft representing not just sporting achievement but profound financial transformation. Last year's broadcast captured several young men breaking down in tears upon selection, overwhelmed by the realisation that family financial struggles had instantly ended with the signing of their first contract.

Universities don't receive transfer fees in this system. Instead, they use athletic success to market their institutions and generate alumni donations. For the players, who receive no salary during their university careers beyond scholarships, the draft represents their first proper payday after years of unpaid labour generating billions for their schools.

The beauty of the NFL Draft is its blend of hope and uncertainty. Each selection represents both a franchise's dream and a calculated risk. This past weekend, 257 young men began writing their NFL stories – some will become legends, others forgotten footnotes. But for a few days each spring, every struggling team's supporter can convince themselves that their fortunes are about to change dramatically.

Join me on the gridiron journey? Fancy something a bit different? I'm considering launching a secondary weekly newsletter called "Red Zone Rookie" where I – a true NFL novice - document my journey into American football fandom. Each week, I'd break down what I've learned about the game's positions, tactics, and peculiar terminology through British eyes. We'd explore everything from the difference between a tight end and a wide receiver to why Americans insist on calling stats "analytics." I'd even dive into the bizarre world of Fantasy Football, where millions compete to build virtual teams based on actual player performances.

Would following along as I transform from confused observer to knowledgeable fan interest you? Reply to this email with a simple "yes" if you'd like to see this happen - if enough readers respond, we'll kick off this parallel newsletter in time for the NFL's pre-season in August. After all, if we're going to properly embrace this American sporting obsession, we might as well do it together, one first down at a time. HUCK 22! CRUMPET RIGHT! BANGERS ON THREE - BREAK!

5. The Most Inspiring Moments of the 2025 London Marathon

More Than a Marathon

While the London Marathon is known for its world-class athletes and record-breaking performances, it’s the stories behind the bibs that often leave the biggest impression. Beyond the finish times and fundraising totals, the 2025 event was filled with powerful moments of resilience, remembrance, and remarkable generosity.

Here are just a few of the stories that captured hearts and lifted spirits on the streets of London.

Lindsey Burrow, the wife of late rugby league legend Rob Burrow, ran in memory of her husband, who passed away in 2024 after his courageous battle with motor neurone disease (MND). Lindsey completed the marathon in 4 hours, 57 minutes, describing the race as a deeply emotional journey. “When it got tough, Rob was my reason WHY,” she said. Her run raised awareness and funds for MND research and care, continuing Rob’s incredible legacy. Remarkably, Lindsey will now take on her second marathon in just two weeks, as she prepares to run the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon on 11th May, again supporting the causes so close to their family’s heart.

Laura Coleman-Day ran in her wedding dress to honour her late husband, Xander, on what would have been their sixth anniversary. It marked her 13th marathon in 12 months, and she raised over $23,000 for Anthony Nolan, a stem cell transplant charity.

Sergio Aguiar and David Stancombe, fathers of two young girls tragically killed in the Southport attack, ran in their daughters’ memory, raising funds for a new school library and charitable trust in their names. Their resilience brought the crowd to tears.

Chris “Rhino Boy” Green completed his 113th marathon wearing a 10kg rhino costume - earning a Guinness World Record for the most marathons run in the same three-dimensional costume. His efforts have raised over £22,000 for Save the Rhino International.
