County Cricket Returns: Your Ultimate 2025 Season Preview

👋 Happy Friday Sports Fans.

This week, we're celebrating the return of the County Championship with our one off, seasoner opener, cricket edition.

We'll guide you through the contenders and pretenders in this season's race for glory, spotlight Surrey's quest for a historic fourth consecutive title, and offer our insights on which overseas signings might just transform their team's fortunes.

So grab your favourite brew, settle into your most comfortable chair, and immerse yourself in our county cricket preview.

1. The Perfect Pour

☕ Coffee of the Week: Cold Brew with a Twist

This week's cricket companion comes in the form of a gloriously chilled Cold Brew infused with Cardamom and Orange Zest.

Much like the County Championship itself, this coffee rewards patience - the lengthy steeping process creates a smooth, nuanced flavour that develops with each sip.

The cardamom offers a respectful nod to cricket's South Asian heritage, while the orange zest provides that refreshing lift needed during those marathon sessions at the crease.

How to Prepare:

  1. Combine 100g of coarsely ground coffee with 1 litre of cold, filtered water in a large jar

  2. Add 4-5 lightly crushed cardamom pods to the mixture

  3. Stir gently, then cover and refrigerate for 12-16 hours

  4. Strain the mixture

  5. Pour over ice in your favourite glass

  6. Garnish with a twist of fresh orange peel, gently squeezing it over the surface to release the oils

2. 🔥☕ Espresso Express – A quick, bold shot of sports headlines, served hot and fast!

⚽ VAR Drama Takes Centre Stage in Merseyside Derby

Everton supporters will still be fuming after Wednesday night's Merseyside Derby. Liverpool claimed the bragging rights with a slender 1-0 victory courtesy of Diogo Jota's clinical finish, but unfortunately it was the VAR controversy that stole the headlines. James Tarkowski's crunching, shin high tackle on Alexis Mac Allister somehow escaped with just a yellow card. Replays confirmed to all but the Video Assistant Referees that it should have been a straight red, leaving the blue half of Merseyside utterly convinced they've been hard done by once again.

🏇 I Am Maximus Chases Racing History in Grand National Showdown

All eyes turn to Aintree this Saturday as I Am Maximus aims to join the pantheon of steeple chasing legends by securing consecutive Grand National victories—a remarkable feat not achieved since the iconic Red Rum's heyday. Willie Mullins' star jumper, partnered by the talented Paul Townend, heads a competitive field of 34 runners including Cheltenham Cross Country winner Stumptown and former Festival hero Iroko.

⛳ Min Woo Lee Cooks at Houston Open

Those familiar with the latest series of Netflix’s Full Swing will share an affinity towards Min Woo Lee. Lee has finally broken his PGA Tour duck, claiming a nail-biting, yet confident one-stroke victory at the Houston Open last Sunday. Despite stumbling with penalty strokes at both the 8th and 16th holes, the composed Aussie fended off the challenge from World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and former US Open champion Gary Woodland to finish at an impressive 20-under-par. Lee's hard-fought maiden victory on American soil not only cements his status amongst golf's rising stars but also secures his coveted invitation to stroll down the azalea-lined fairways of Augusta National at the upcoming Masters Tournament. Expect to hear fans shouting his famous catchphrase - LET HIM COOK!

Your County Championship Guide

It’s that time of year folks! The clocks have sprung forward, the days are longer and the scent of freshly mown grass is in the air - it’s County Cricket season! The 125th Rothesay County Championship bowls into action with Surrey taking on Essex this Friday. This treasured competition, gracing our summers since 1890, continues to be cricket's finest testing ground where established internationals and promising youngsters alike will showcase their talents across 14 hard-fought matches. For those new to county cricket or unfamiliar with the format, there are 18 teams or counties. The counties are arranged in two divisions - ten in Division One and eight hoping for promotion (Division Two). So before you don your whites and find yourself at Silly Mid-On, swot up on the 2025 county championship whilst finishing that brew - careful don’t spill any on your whites!

Division One - 2024 Finishing Order

Surrey

Rivals: Middlesex, Essex

Captain: Rory Burns (Opening Batsman)

Key Players: Ollie Pope (Middle-Order Batsman), Jamie Smith (Wicketkeeper & Batsman), Kemar Roach (Fast Bowler)

Outlook: Surrey stride into the new campaign hunting a remarkable fourth consecutive title, a feat not witnessed since Yorkshire's dominant sixties. Their enviable squad blends seasoned pros with bright-eyed youngsters, while West Indies speedster Kemar Roach returns to bolster an already formidable bowling unit. Few would dare bet against the London outfit maintaining their relentless dominance this season. Can they do it 4 times in a row!

Hampshire

Rivals: Sussex, Surrey

Captain: Ben Brown (Wicketkeeper & Batsman)

Key Players: Kyle Abbott (Right-Arm Fast Bowler), Jack Edwards (All-Rounder)

Outlook: Always the bridesmaid never the bride. Runners-up finish last term, the south coast outfit has shrewdly recruited Australian all-rounder Jack Edwards for their opening seven fixtures, adding much-needed muscle to both batting and bowling departments. With one of the most balanced squads in the competition, they'll fancy themselves to finally go one better this season and claim cricket's most prestigious domestic crown.

Somerset

Rivals: Gloucestershire, Surrey

Captain: Tom Abell (Middle-Order Batman)

Key Players: Lewis Gregory (All-Rounder), Jack Leach (Left-Arm Orthodox Spinner)

Outlook: West Country hopes are strong after securing Kiwi seamer Matt Henry's return for the first-half of the campaign. The Taunton outfit has further strengthened with South African all-rounder Migael Pretorius across all formats. These overseas acquisitions have transformed the long suffering West Country side into genuine title contenders this season.

Essex

Rivals: Kent, Surrey

Captain: Tom Westley (Batsman)

Key Players: Simon Harmer (Off-Spin Bowler), Dean Elgar (Opening Batsman)

Outlook: The Eagles have wisely recruited South African opener Dean Elgar to complement the wizardry of their trusty spinner Simon Harmer, who remains the division's most potent slow-bowling threat. This perfectly balanced blend of continuity and fresh blood ensures the Chelmsford outfit will remain formidable challengers when the serious business begins this weekend.

Durham

Rivals: Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire

Captain: Alex Lees (Opening Batsman)

Key Players: David Bedingham (Middle-Order Batsman), Brendan Doggett (Fast Bowler)

Outlook: Durham's batting lineup stands as their undisputed strong suit, with the remarkable David Bedingham continuing to punish bowlers across the country. The northern outfit have shrewdly secured Australian fast bowler Brendan Doggett for their first six fixtures, providing vital early-season firepower when pitches typically favour the seamers. This strategic overseas selection could well propel the Riverside team towards a flying start in their championship campaign.

Worcestershire

Rivals: Warwickshire, Gloucestershire

Captain: Brett D'Oliveira (All-Rounder)

Key Players: Tom Taylor (All-Rounder), Ben Dwarshuis (Fast Bowler)

Outlook: Worcestershire aims to improve upon last season's mid-table finish. The batting prowess of Jake Libby, combined with the all-round capabilities of Matthew Waite, provides a solid foundation. Their performance will hinge on consistency.

Warwickshire

Rivals: Worcestershire, Nottinghamshire

Captain: Alex Davies (Wicketkeeper & Batsman)

Key Players: Tom Latham (Opening Batsman), Hassan Ali (Fast Bowler)

Outlook: The Bears have secured the services of New Zealand's composed opener Tom Latham alongside Pakistani pace merchant Hassan Ali, who joins the fray from late May. These worldly additions bring much-needed experience and quality to Edgbaston, potentially transforming the Midlands outfit from mid-table mediocrity into genuine contenders for cricket's most coveted domestic prize.

Nottinghamshire

Rivals: Derbyshire, Leicestershire

Captain: Haseeb Hameed (Opening Batsman)

Key Players: Mohammad Abbas (Fast Bowler), Kyle Verreynne (Wicketkeeper & Batsman)

Outlook: Nottinghamshire spent most of last season nervously glancing over their shoulders at the relegation trapdoor. The Trent Bridge outfit have responded by recruiting South African gloveman Kyle Verreynne and Pakistani seam wizard Mohammad Abbas (for six crucial early fixtures) to shore up their evident weaknesses. These tactical signings should provide the quality injection needed, but it will require a unified team effort if the East Midlands side are to avoid another season of nail-biting survival battles.

Sussex (Promoted – 1st in Div 2)

Rivals: Surrey, Hampshire

Captain: John Simpson (Wicketkeeper & Batsman)

Key Players: Jayden Seales (Fast Bowler), Jack Carson (Off-Spin Bowler)

Outlook: Finally back in cricket's top tier after claiming last season's Division Two crown. The south coast outfit have wisely avoided wholesale changes, demonstrating admirable faith in the young talents that secured promotion. Their shrewd overseas recruitment adds crucial experience to complement their homegrown stars. Now the test is survival—and perhaps more…

Yorkshire (Promoted – 2nd in Div 2)

Rivals: Lancashire, Durham

Captain: Jonny Bairstow (Wicketkeeper & Batsman)

Key Players: Joe Root (Middle-Order Batsman), Ben Sears (Fast Bowler)

Outlook: Yorkshire make their eagerly anticipated return to Division One cricket with England stalwart Jonny Bairstow taking the reins as red-ball captain. The Headingley outfit have bolstered their squad with canny overseas acquisitions Will Sutherland and Ben Sears, whilst former player Anthony McGrath returns as head coach to guide the traditional powerhouse. With veteran run-machine Adam Lyth still churning out scores and Dawid Malan leading the T20 charge, the White Rose county appears well-equipped to make their presence felt amongst the elite rather than merely making up the numbers

Division Two – 2024 Finishing Order

Leicestershire (3rd in Division 2)

Rivals: Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire

Captain: Peter Handscomb (Wicketkeeper & Batsman)

Key Players: Rishi Patel (Batsman), Rehan Ahmed (All-Rounder)

Outlook: The Grace Road outfit have recruited smartly over the winter months, securing a blend of battle-hardened internationals alongside their promising academy graduates. While mid-table mediocrity has become something of a habit for the East Midlands county, there's a refreshing sense of cautious optimism emanating from their camp this term. The question remains whether these perennial underdogs can finally find the consistency required to trouble Division Two's established powers.

Glamorgan (4th in Division 2)

Rivals: Gloucestershire, Somerset

Captain: Sam Northeast (Batsman)

Key Players: Marnus Labuschagne (All-Rounder), Asitha Fernando (Fast Bowler)

Outlook: The Cardiff outfit boasts impressive leadership in Sam Northeast, complemented by Australian star Marnus Labuschagne and Sri Lankan quick Asitha Fernando providing international pedigree. Their bowling attack looks rather tasty with van der Gugten and Crane supporting Fernando, though question marks linger over their opening partnership. If Billy Root and young Asa Tribe can solve this top-order conundrum, the Welsh county might just transform from plucky underdogs into genuine promotion contenders.

Gloucestershire (5th in Division 2)

Rivals: Somerset, Worcestershire

Captain: Cameron Bancroft (Opening Batsman)

Key Players: Cameron Green (All-Rounder), James Bracey (Wicketkeeper & Batsman)

Outlook: Spearheaded by returning Australian skipper Cameron Bancroft, the Bristol-based outfit have pulled off quite the coup in securing Test all-rounder Cameron Green for five crucial early-season matches—a statement of intent if ever there was one. Home-grown talents James Bracey and Miles Hammond provide the backbone following impressive 2024 campaigns, while emerging seamer Zaman Akhter leads a bowling unit bolstered by versatile Aussie Beau Webster. The West Country side certainly have the tools for a promotion charge if they can transform those frustrating draws into decisive victories.

Middlesex (6th in Division 2)

Rivals: Surrey, Essex

Captain: Toby Roland-Jones (Fast-Medium Bowler)

Key Players: Kane Williamson (Batsman), Blake Cullen (Fast-Medium Bowler)

Outlook: Middlesex's promotion credentials will be significantly enhanced by the mid-season arrival of New Zealand maestro Kane Williamson - quite the statement signing from the Lord's outfit. The bowling department looks equally impressive with South African workhorse Dane Paterson and Pakistani spinner Zafar Gohar joining captain Toby Roland-Jones and the returning Blake Cullen. The ever-reliable Max Holden and all-rounder Ryan Higgins provide crucial backbone across all formats for a side that narrowly missed the promotion boat last term. With such impressive reinforcements, it is unlikely that this London outfit will suffer the same heartbreak this time around.

Northamptonshire (7th in Division 2)

Rivals: Warwickshire, Leicestershire

Captain: Luke Procter (Batsman)

Key Players: Ricardo Vasconcelos (Wicketkeeper & Batsman), Ben Sanderson (Medium-Fast Bowler)

Outlook: Northamptonshire have undergone quite an ambitious reset. Now guided by straight-talking Australian legend Darren Lehmann in the coaching box alongside new skipper Luke Procter, The County Ground outfit have assembled quite the international contingent. Indian spin wizard Yuzvendra Chahal, South African stroke-maker Matthew Breetzke and Aussie quick Harry Conway all join the ranks. After last season's forgettable campaign, these shrewd acquisitions signal serious intent from a side desperate to challenge for promotion. Their early-season clash with fellow contenders Kent could well set the tone for whether they can transform themselves into genuine Division Two challengers.

Derbyshire (8th in Division 2)

Rivals: Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire

Captain: Wayne Madsen (Batsman)

Key Players: Luis Reece (All-Rounder), Caleb Jewell (Opening Batsman)

Outlook: The county's recruitment drive has netted some intriguing talent, with Australian stroke maker Caleb Jewell and Kiwi speedster Blair Tickner bringing international quality to a traditionally modest setup. Perhaps most exciting for the faithful at the Incora County Ground is the emergence of teenage seam sensation Harry Moore, barely old enough to drive yet already turning heads. While promotion might remain a distant dream, this refreshed Derbyshire side should certainly provide more resistance than the pushovers of seasons past.

Kent (Relegated from Division 1)

Rivals: Surrey, Essex

Captain: Daniel Bell-Drummond (Opening Batsman)

Key Players: Zak Crawley (Batsman), Corey Flintoff (All-Rounder & Son of Freddie)

Outlook: New Head Coach Adam Hollioake, the former England all-rounder has been charged with steering the Canterbury outfit back to cricket's top table. The Garden County has strengthened significantly with Australian quick Wes Agar and versatile gloveman Chris Benjamin joining Daniel Bell-Drummond's promotion-hunting squad. Perhaps most intriguing is the arrival of young Corey Flintoff - yes, son of 'Freddie' - who brings that famous family's cricketing DNA to the Spitfire Ground. With Sam Billings marshalling the T20 troops and this blend of proven performers alongside emerging talent, Kent appear well-equipped to mount a serious challenge for one of those coveted promotion spots.

Lancashire (Relegated from Division 1)

Rivals: Yorkshire, Derbyshire

Captain: Keaton Jennings (Opening Batsman)

Key Players: James Anderson (Fast Bowler), Marcus Harris (Opening Batsman)

Outlook: It's no secret that the Old Trafford outfit are seeking an immediate return to cricket's top flight. The Red Rose county has shrewdly strengthened their batting with Australian opener Marcus Harris and Scottish run-machine Michael Jones joining Keaton Jennings' ambitious squad. England legend James Anderson continues to defy time and age, though a niggling calf complaint will delay his season debut until May. Under Dale Benkenstein's astute coaching, this blend of international experience and homegrown talent makes Lancashire firm favourites to escape Division Two at the first time of asking - anything less would be considered a proper disappointment for this proud northern powerhouse.
